JASON FELT HER WORDS hit him like a ton of bricks. She thought she was falling in love with him? Jesus. This was too much. He already felt like he was sitting on a land mine, his every cell ratcheted up to the point that he was going to explode. And he did. Nightly in that damn jeep. And then into his nightmare walks this ray of sunshine, who says she’s falling in love? It was too much. IED, amnesia, shared dreams and then this? He couldn’t handle it.
His hands started shaking, and then his belly cramped. She was looking at him with her heart in her eyes, and all he could do was stand there fighting the pain.
“Jason? Say something.”
“Turn around.” His throat was clenched tight, but he forced the words out.
“What?”
“Turn around!”
She flinched at his tone, and he silently cursed himself. “Please,” he said, trying to be gentle. “I don’t want— You can’t see— Not when I’m like this. Please.” He closed his eyes and pressed his fists to his eyes. “Don’t look at me.”
She touched his fist, her fingers so tender it made his knees weak. “You think I haven’t seen a man in pain before? Jason, you’ve been heading for this for weeks now. I had to—”
He threw off her fingers, grabbed her by the waist and spun her around. She gasped in surprise, but he didn’t hurt her. He made damn sure he didn’t hurt her. He just wanted to hold her, but away from him. She couldn’t be looking at him right now. He didn’t want to see her doe eyes or her sweet halo of brown hair.
I think I’m falling in love with you.
It was too much to process. Not when he had other things on his plate. Not when people’s lives hung in the balance. His damn memory. A bioweapons factory making something that could kill half a city in a blink of an eye. And yet the more he thought of that, the more he remembered her words.
I think I’m falling in love with you.
She couldn’t. He couldn’t. And yet she was here in his arms.
“Jason, it’s okay. It’s going to be okay.”
He nodded, tucking his chin against her neck, her bottom against his groin. She was soft and she felt so damn good. He closed his eyes and breathed deep. She smelled like some fruity shampoo and herself. She was wearing shorts and a loose tee. He slipped his fingers underneath her shirt to stroke her smooth belly. She touched the back of his hands through her shirt. It was only a light press, but he felt it like he felt that IED explode beneath the jeep. Everything went white and his whole body screamed.
Except this was a good scream, though just as painful. His breath rasped and he tightened his grip. His entire body was tight with the need to thrust into her, but he couldn’t move.
